The Settler was composed in Oberlin, Ohio (2002). This work was created for a short film by director Rian Brown. It is a science-fiction, astro-environmental tale about the first person to settle and develop Mars. Filmed entirely in Los Angeles, it becomes evident that the work is actually a meditation on contemporary Southern California. The "settler," played by Jean-Pierre Gorin, reflects on his departure from Earth, the early exploration and development of Mars, and how the planet was "terra-formed" to support human life. The story is divided between the dystopic reality shot on digital video and the utopic dream shot on film.
