Je ne suis pas mon pays Hanson Records
image of record album Je ne suis pas mon pays was composed in Oberlin, Ohio (2004). The primary sound source for this work is the hammered dulcimer, a folk instrument in the United States with roots in many cultures (for example, the yang-qin in China and the cymbalom in Hungary). It is a difficult process determining what to accept and what to reject from one's own culture. I truly rejoice in my country's musical culture, I truly despise my country's political culture. The English translation of the title is, "I am not my country."
That's Quiet Alright Hanson Records
image of record album That's Quiet Alright was created by Tom Lopez and Stephen Sloan in the late 1980's. The source material was 100% analog on reel-to-reel tape and included Moog, ARP, and Buchla synthesizers; vinyl records; didgeridoo; microphones; and various delay units.

Confetti Variations Innova
image of cd album Confetti Variations was written for pianist Jeri-Mae Astolfi. She told me that among her admired composers of piano music were Johannes Brahms and Morton Feldman. That pairing struck me as a remarkable combination and I began dreaming of a Brahms/Feldman/Lopez mashup. My composition process entailed shredding Brahms and Feldman piano music into brightly colored fragments, firing the sparkly bits into the air, and listening to them rain down over field recordings.
The Death of the Moth Centaur
image of cd album The Death of the Moth features the Oberlin Conservatory, Contemporary Music Ensemble under the direction of Tim Weiss. "Men rush to their doom like moths flying to their death in the candle-flame" — Bhagavad Gita. The moth is drawn towards light, and like Icarus, will inevitably burn its wings and fall. The Death of the Moth is a meditation on mankind's "falling from grace" and his out-of-balance relationship with nature. The title is from a short story by Virginia Woolf.
